Latvia's Martins Podzus was the first to register a victory, but he had to battle past a resilient Elias Ymer in the opening rubber, eventually winning 76(3) 75 67(5) 36 97 in five hours and 20 minutes.
Christian Lindell then levelled the score for the hosts with an equally gruelling encounter against Janis Podzus, which lasted three hours 53 minutes and saw the Swede triumph courtesy of three tiebreaks 76(5) 46 76(3) 76(7).
The doubles duo of Johan Brunstrom and Robert Lindstedt, who on paper should have won easily against Mikelis Libietis and Martins Podzus, needed five sets and almost three hours to win the point which gave the hosts a 2-1 lead on day two in Jonkoping.
